Influence of the Roman empire

The Roman empire had contributed a lot to the world history. Even though it already ended almost 1500 years ago, its memories or remains are still alive and remembered.

The Romans constructed bridges, roads, buildings and other architectural works during the reign of their empire. They built it for the empowerment of their empire but as of now, it is very useful to all of us. and to our everyday lives.

Many people are also still using the Latin language which was the language of the Romans during that time.

Their law codes became the basis of the law codes of the European and Latin-American nations.

Roman attributes were also still dominant nowadays. Those were being just, being tolerant and having desire for peace.

The Roman empire also contributed a lot to the spread and strengthening of Christianity. It was when Emperor Theodosius declared that Christianity would be the official religion of the empire. Christianity is still the dominant religion today.

These are the contributions and influences of the Roman empire to the modern world.

Contributions of the Roman Empire

Byzantine empire contributed a lot to our history especially to the people who lived during this time. First, the empire had contributed a lot of things involving the religious aspects. Iconoclasts or the people who attacked traditional ideas arose during that time. And that resulted to the division of the Catholic church. Eastern Orthodox Church and Western Roman Catholic Church were formed. Next, art and architecture during that time flourished. Great artworks were made during that time. One good example is the Church of Santa Sophia. The people during that time also excelled in ivory carving, manuscripts and illumination of mosaics. Lastly, commerce and trading prospered. Jewish Muslims and Italian merchants dominated over overseas trading. These were the contributions of the Byzantine empire.

Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ was born in Nazareth in Judea. He is the Son of God and was born for a certain purpose: to spread God's love and word and to die for all of us to save us from our sins.

Jesus performed a lot of miracles and He taught everybody God's word which changed the lives of a lot of people. Because of that, many got jealous of Him. The people who got jealous of Him were the Pharisees. They cannot accept that a son of a carpenter preaches the Good news and can perform miraculous deeds. So, they plotted to kill Jesus and they succeeded. They accused and arrested Him because of "blasphemy" and they handed Him over to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor.
He sentenced Jesus to death by crucifixion. Jesus eventually died in pain and agony by the sentence that was given to Him.

Jesus endured all of these sufferings because He loves us all and He wanted to save us from our sins. All we have to do is to believe and have faith in Him in orderc to be saved and to attain eternal life.

The spread of Christianity

Christianity grew steadily and it spread on almost all over the world. It flourished on the third century.

Christianity spread when it became appealing to the people during that time because it promotes monotheism and it indicates that Christianity is for everybody: for men, for women, for rich and for poor. It also promised a certain thing for everybody: that if you believe and have faith in Christ, you will be saved and will have an eternal life. Spread of Christianity was a success by the help of the apostles and the preachers.

On 380 CE, Emperor Theodosius made Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire.

Catholic crusades

The Catholic crusades happened during the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries was intended for the Catholics especially for the pope to regain the Holy Land which was Jerusalem and for the Catholics to prove that they are the dominating religion in the world. Many died during this period because nobody wanted to become losers and everybody wanted to defend their own religion.

The crusades started on March 1095. It was started by Pope Urban II. He gathered the people of all classes for them to fight and regain Jerusalem which was taken by the Turks. It succeeded and somehow, the Europeans became united.

The second crusade started on 1147 and it was led by Pope Eugene III. King Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany helped him. They gathered all of the Eurp[ean noblemen. This crusade failed to succeed and it was a victory for the Muslims.

The third crusade started on 1187 and it was started by Pope Gregory VII. Philip I of France, Richard I of England and Frederick I helped the pope on the second crusade. But then, they also failed to succeed.

The fourth crusade was started by Pope Innocent III. It started on 1202. Hi0s i0ntenti0o0n was to0 i0nvade the Ho0ly land thro0ugh Egypt. It was very brutal because many people died in this crusade. But then, this was the final breaking point of the Great Schism between the Eastern Orthodox church and the Western Roman Catholic church.

The crusades were very brutal and it showed the greediness of the popes during that time. Even I am a Catholic, I strongly disagree with what the Europeans did during this time. I hope that it will never happen again.

Own perspective about Oedipus Rex

Oedipus Rex is a myth. It is the story which is unbelievable and can never happen in real life. This is a story of tragedy for the main character killed his own father and married his own mother.

In my own perspective, this is not true. Maybe this can happen in real life but nobody can tell or predict it. And a child can never marry his own mother because first, I believe in the connection or feeling of a mother towards her son which is called "lukso ng dugo" in Tagalog. I also believe that physical attributes can be a true measurement for you to recognize your real parents. This story is really unbelievable and can never happen in real life.

Interference of the gods with the lives of the mortals

In my own opinion, I really don't believe and agree with this thing because first of all, we have only one mighty God, no more, no less. There is no other God except Jesus, our King and Savior.

Yes, it is true that God is interfering with our lives because He is the only one who knows what is happening and what is going to happen to our lives. But then, with the situation of polytheistic belief, their faith is divided. They cannot focus on just one god. They worship so many gods and they believe that they should please all of them in order for them to have a good life. Unlike to us, Christians, we only believe in one God and all we have to do is to have faith in Him, repent for our sins and live up the word of God. I disagree with the belief of having many gods but I believe and agree that God interferes with our lives.
